What Is Alcohol Detox?
Short for Detoxification, Detox is often the first step of the Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehab treatment process. The body’s reaction to the removal of any substances it has come to be dependent on such as alcohol will result in withdrawal.

The Detox Process
Withdrawal can cause severe craving for more when there is no longer any Alcohol or Drugs in a person’s body and is caused by stopping or dramatically reducing alcohol or drug use after heavy prolonged using or drinking.
The reaction to the withdrawal of alcohol or drugs frequently includes:
- Drug craving
- Abdominal cramping
- Inability to sleep,
During the Detox period substitute medications are commonly prescribed to reduce these symptoms and make the patient more comfortable. Then over a relatively short period of time these medications will be reduced in a controlled way until this is stopped completely. Sometimes additional medications may be used if another problem exists – for example lack of sleep is often experienced.
Alcohol and substance withdrawal can be fatal and cannot be abruptly stopped due to severe withdrawals leading to seizures or alcoholic fitting.
