CASE STUDY: Adrian in Belgravia (London)
Adrian is a venture capitalist. If someone comes to him with an idea for a promising business venture (or they already have a small, fast-growing company that cannot raise funds on the stock market), he considers investing in it. He fronts the money, and then sits back and waits for his outlay to pay dividends later on. The guy is a multi-millionaire with an eye for the main chance. But his smartest investment of all was in himself (and it didn’t cost him £millions).
Going to Rehab was the best money I ever spent. If I hadn’t finally faced up to my addiction,
I’d probably be dead by now, to be quite honest.
The two sides of the drinker
Adrian was drinking two bottles of brandy a day, and an incalculable amount of vodka each evening.
When he was making all those venture capital investment decisions, wasn’t he just a tad worried that his escalating alcohol consumption level might begin to impair his judgement?
Incredibly, it never did. I know that sounds arrogant, but I never once made a poor business decision when drunk. I was as successful at work when hammered as when I was as sober as a judge (which wasn’t often!). Everything was fine work-wise, but my home life was a different story. I put my wife Cassandra through a living hell.
Drink can become the ‘third person’ in a relationship
The impact of heavy drinking on relationships can be devastating. Every year across the country, thousands of marriages break down due to alcoholism: alcohol abuse by one or both partners. Couples can split up due to alcoholism (drink can become the ‘third person’ in the relationship, leading to an eventual parting of the ways), but then find themselves unable to afford separate accommodation, meaning they have to remain living together for some time.
Adrian being an extremely high earner meant that he had no such problem:
I was luckier than most; I had the money to move into a luxury penthouse apartment in Central London during the weeks prior to and after Rehab. It gave Cassandra and I the space we needed. I was able to work through my problems at a private Rehab Clinic in Luton, benefit from the Clinic’s Aftercare* help once I was back in Central London, and then return to the family home. Not everyone is in such a fortunate position, I know.
* Free Aftercare is offered by the majority of Clinics; where qualified professionals work with both patient and Rehab treatment provider to ensure there is a continuity of care
